SoW, I think your chance for stardom has finally arrived:

"Are you the Russian Snooki or The Situation? Are you a super outgoing and fun-loving Russian-American that sometimes sneaks kalbaska, pel'meni and vodka from the fridge? Can people hear the Euro/Techno/Russian music blasting from your car before they see you pull up? Do you attend birthday parties at Russian restaurants every weekend? If so, we may want to cast you for a new reality TV show that centers around a group of Russian-American strangers living together in a house on the shores of Brighton Beach for a summer. The cameras will roll as you do what you do best — eat, drink and PARTY."

Please forgive me if this went through twice, but the first attempt did not look like it was successful...

Hello, Andre, Boris, and Vadim:

My name is John Wilpers. I am the Global Blog Coordinator for GlobalPost, a new international news organization set to launch on Jan. 12 (see www.globalpost.com).

My job is to build a list of blogs that will appear on GlobalPost where we will have approximately 65 correspondents in some 46 countries. We are looking for enlightening, informative posts from bloggers writing (in English) in those countries.

I am pleased to extend an invitation to you to have the most recent post of Sovok of the Week included on the Russia page of GlobalPost.com as part of our “Global Blogs” service.

After reviewing thousands of blogs worldwide, we have found Sovok of the Week to be one that is thought provoking and gives readers a true sense of what life is really like in Russia.

The way it would work if you accept our invitation is that we would use your RSS feed to place your most recent post on your personal page on GlobalPost.com. We would point back to your actual blog for comments and for archives, hopefully driving lots of traffic to your site. Each time you write a new post, it would replace the older one so only one post would appear on GlobalPost.com.

By appearing on Global Post’s exciting new international news website, your words, viewpoints, and pictures would gain worldwide exposure. Your posts would not only appear instantly on globalpost.com but also possibly on the sites of our partners, including the Huffington Post (7.8 million U.S. and 9.7 million global monthly unique visitors) and other news and information websites.

You don’t need to do anything differently. We do request that you consider pointing back to us from your blog (we will send out logos shortly for your consideration).

You should know that we have a few guidelines that we observe here at Global Post:

1) We do not publish racist, sexist, or misogynist comments (unless those comments are the subject of the post).
2) We do not publish obscene language or photos. While we recognize that obscenity can be difficult to define, we know it when we see it and we will let you know if we think you have crossed our line.
3) We do not permit plagiarism. Any work taken from another source must be attributed to that source.
4) We do not publish libelous or slanderous language.
5) We do not tolerate repeated errors of fact or misrepresentations of facts or quotes.
6) We do not publish work inciting violence.

Failure to observe these guidelines would result in the removal of your blog from GlobalPost. We would contact you, of course, to discuss the post in question.

Because we have a broad multicultural audience holding every conceivable political and religious viewpoint, we want to respect their views while also possibly challenging them. We will host controversial work. We will encourage robust debate of the hottest topics. We will not stifle discussion, only abuse of people, belief systems, and laws.

We hope these guidelines are acceptable to you.

I look forward getting your permission to put your RSS feed on our site.

Sincerely,

John Wilpers

PS If you choose to accept our invitation and would like a photo and a short biography to appear on GlobalPost, please send both to me with your confirmation e-mail or at some time shortly thereafter.

Not only has SotW podcast and Boris returned but, yes, it is I, Reader C! The first known financial supporter of the show!

Due to the impending collapse of capitalism I cannot send a donation for this auspicious occasion, but I shall be thinking of both of you, Vadim and Boris, as I enjoy the beer and whiskey of friends, neighbors and parents!

Well done on the new show!

Well me oh my!! I was hoping to hear from Boris and now here you are! :))
Boris did you change your IM name or stop using it? I know you of course didn't block me but I can't seem to find you and you haven't responded to my last 4 or 5 letters that I sent on e-cards either! I thought long and hard about the pics and music on those e-cards so you should check 'em out! :0-) I think they could give you a giggle.
Congratulations Vadim and Boris on your new podcast. :)

With the Fed and Congress privatizing everything as quick as we can say 'Hugo Chavez', the US is definately on the road to socialism. My advice to any banker [if they still have a job] is to change their reading material from Forbes to Das Capital''. Marx did predict the downfall of capitalism and had a better understanding of economic issues than Mr Greenspan.

The Great October Revolution was neither great, in October, socialist, or a revolution...discuss!!!

It was not great, only limited to Petrograd.
It was not in October, but in November.
It was not socialist, but Bolshevik.
It was not really a Revolution, but an anti-Tsarist coup.

I adore Azis! I was hooked the very first time I saw a video of his. Now I'm studying Bulgarian and can read in the Cyrillic alphabet. I tell people that I learned how to read Cyrillic from a Bulgarian drag queen. ;)

It is amazing how there are people who are trying to copy him! You know when an artist makes a big impact when people want to imitate him.

Voronezh is a big, nice, histirical city.
In USA very offen there is no difference between a capital of state and an instate city.
very often. Theire constructions are ugly.
Enjoy your cityand sculptur! It is bronse!
Let's Voronezh will have it more, if they can.
Maybe it will be interesting for history too.

You are so right-it's spooky. I am sure you have noticed that we've been hammering on this topic for five years now-Americans gravitate towards Soviet-era sovokism with more gusto than Russians at this time. My younger Russian-American friends stare at me with bewilderment when I crank up Alla.

As one of the comments to your story said it, it has a lot to do with ideology, and I agree with that. Also, Americans love new things and like to feel good about themselves. Unfortunately, low attention span and lack of self-satire may contribute to the embrace of patterns with which you and I are very familiar with. Much work needs to be done in educating Americans on what it means to be a "Sovok." Let the exploration continue!

Spooky isn't it. There is this fellow, Dmitry Orlov, who has this ... well, I think it is a power point presentation, comparing and contrasting the collapse of the Soviet Union to the collapse of America. I know hipster Americans are being earth-friendly with their pakety, but it I can't help but associate the "don't leave the house without your reusable bag" phenomenon with standing in line for beets and toothpaste. Not that I don't like beets. or toothpaste.

Sovoks are shopping at Whole Foods?

You know, I tried to write something about the similarities between "sovok" and contemporary America, but it devolved into an inability for anyone to agree on or get the definition of "sovok." What is your expert opinion on the matter?

Failed attempt:

Yes, she is polarizing but wait till Obama starts sharing his platform and McCain beats him. This country is at the core very conservative (except for some urban areas) and it will rather elect someone predictable than revolutionary. We'll see.

Well, not that polls are entirely reliable, but Obama polls better against McCain than Hillary does, and that's one major reason why I've decided to support him. Half the country starts hyperventilating as soon as they hear the name Clinton, so I really worry that she's unelectable, or at least less electable. I wouldn't mind a President Hillary, and if she's the nominee I'll do what I can from remote Sweden to support her. :-)

Good point, but as you might have noticed, this blog is about a post-Soviet man trying to make it in the land of plenty and his road is not simple. He tries to overcome his outrageous sovokishness but yet wants to preserve some of it. This contradiction is at the heart of a Sovok who lives in a foreign land-an attempt to embrace the West and keep himself in the East.

I am tired of Komsomol and empty rhetoric. I am tired of "freedom is not free" and "democracy for the Middle East" slogans-all empty words. What worries me is that Barak, the favorite of hipsters, vegans, and all the rest who call themselves progressive, might actually lose to McCain in November. All of his supporters sitting in trendy bars sipping microbrews will gasp in disbelief as a technocrat like McCain will be chosen by the American public as their next President. It happened before-remember Kerry? No one remembers him but he had fiery and inspirational speeches, too, and yet he was beaten by the pragmatic George Bush.

And, by the way, thank you for reading my blog, Megan!

"Barak Obama, a demagogue who sounds like a Komsomol leader from 1984. His “Yes We Can” campaign smacks of some Soviet railroad-building hysteria where “hope” would propel us to the new heights of achievements, unity, solidarity, and understanding"

Wait, then shouldn't Sovok of the Week ENDORSE him?

I like Obama. I mean, one shouldn't pay much attention to any campaign's rhetoric. But whatevs, I can respect your endorsement and the reasons behind it.

right, Laura, geo is pointless because grad students do nothing. they definitely dont teach 75 snobby undergrads a week, pick up after professors mistakes, and work nearly full time jobs on top of a full load of graduate courses. surely they dont deserve to be paid a living wage and of course they are all spoiled brats who never have to worry about money, health care, or student loans. think before you speak.

So, I live in Wisconsin. Hipsters of the Great Lakes states are sure to have much in common.

Here in Madison, WI, there are many different types of hipsters. Let's start with the most mainstream: the University of Wisconsin student. This student probably shops at Urban Outfitters and Ragstock, is internet and media savvy, showers on a regular basis, and goes to indie shows featuring bands such as the Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Rainer Maria, etc.

Then there are bike hipsters. A bike hipster is typically a twenty-something male with a tall, slender body, maybe black-framed glasses, snug jeans, and a fixed gear bicycle. The bike hipster is often found bragging about his fixed gear. He may have an awkwardly-placed facial piercing or randomly dyed section of hair.

There are the metal hipsters. These people do not know they are hipsters and will usually say "fuck hipsters". But they are possibly the hippest of them all. Metal hipsters are usually very DIY, live in housing with 5 or 6 other people, have house shows, listen to genres such as 'sludge', 'doom', and 'grindcore', drink awful beer such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Stroh's, Hamms, LaCrosse, Milwaukee's Best, Blatz, or whatever they can afford from working part-time at the pizza place. Wisconsin metal hipsters are generally unwashed, don't believe in much of anything, and are very awkward in social situations. The Wisconsin metal hipster is a bit more elitist in his or her taste in music and may still be into cassettes or getting some band's new 7" record.

Those clips are sad and scary and horrifying. But then, these aren't the Americans who "won" the cold war. That was supposedly the Reaganites, who are sad and scary and horrifying in a completely different way.

Well, "banki" are these empty glass containers into which a burning swab of cotton on a stick soaked in alcohol is placed. By quickly removing the swab, vacuum is created and the "banki" are placed quickly on a sick person's back. Supposedly, the procedure induces the flow of blood to the back thus producing a healing effect. Good old Russian technique, stolen, undoubtedly, from the Chinese. The photo shows a "banki"-savaged back and "medallions" left when the "banki" are removed.
